Springfield Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood, Superintendent of Schools Daniel Warwick and Mayor Domenic J. Sarno would like to encourage families to have a safety plan if they are hosting or their child is attending any graduation party in the next few weeks.
In the wake of multiple shootings across the country at graduation parties we recommend parents of students attending any party talk openly and honesty with their children and to have a safety plan. Discuss exit strategies and when it may be time to leave before the party ends if there is a sense it may be getting out of hand. Also talk about the dangers of drinking and distracted driving. Encourage the use of a designated driver or ride share to get home. Confirm the location of any graduation parties and make sure there will be adult supervision. Tell your graduate that you are available to take their call at any time no questions asked. The safety of your children is paramount.
Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood stated, “From Manchester, New Hampshire to Georgia there have been a handful of shootings at graduation parties around the country this month. We don’t want to see someone’s hard work and what should be a celebratory day end in a tragedy due to invited or uninvited guests. We urge you to have a plan ahead of time to both get home safely and avoid any trouble at your party.”
Superintendent of Schools Daniel Warwick said the district will host 10 graduation ceremonies between June 5th and August 15th. “This is the most joyous time of the academic year; a time for making happy memories that graduates and their families will talk about for years to come. With all the parties that will take place with friends and families, it’s important to remind all our graduates to make wise decisions as they celebrate so that this momentous occasion remains one of joy and celebration for themselves and their loved ones.”
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno states, “This is a joyous time for our graduating students and their family and friends. Your hard work and dedication both in and out of the classroom is to be commended. Graduating is a tremendous accomplishment, one that should be celebrated and enjoyed. School Superintendent Daniel Warwick, Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood and I would like to remind everyone that, as we are all celebrating this special and happy occasion, please stay safe and drive responsibly. All of our graduates have a bright future and we want you to enjoy and celebrate in a safe and responsible manner. Congratulations.”
Other tips for those graduates hosting a party include not promoting the party on social media, only allow invited guests to attend and end the party before it gets too late.
