Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Chief Development Officer Tim Sheehan, Springfield Redevelopment Authority (SRA) Director Amanda Pham, and Chief of Staff Tom Ashe joined with Winn Companies Executive Vice President Michael O’Brien, Peter Picknelly, Edison Yee and Nathan Yee from the Bean Restaurant Group, Fontaine Brothers President Dave Fontaine whose company has been in business in Springfield for 100 years, and other officials to provide Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll and MassDevelopment President Dan Rivera with a special tour of the 31 Elm Street project to showcase and highlight the major and historic economic development project that will bring jobs, housing (including market-rate and workforce housing), and space for restaurants and other amenities to the city.
Mayor Sarno states, “I want to thank Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, who is serving as acting Governor while Governor Maura Healey is traveling to Ireland, and MassDevelopment President Dan Rivera, who both as former mayors always the heart of a mayor, for taking the time to visit and view the progress of this major and historic economic development project at 31 Elm Street. This is yet another project the nay-sayers said would never get done. The 31 Elm Street project, a unique public-private partnership, is a legacy project that will reactivity an underutilized property in the heart of our downtown. In addition, to the housing component, retail space, restaurant (which will honor the late Andy Yee), the project will create numerous jobs, enhance the walkability of our downtown connecting MGM Springfield, the MassMutual Center and our entire downtown Convention District, along with promote workforce training aspects.”
“It is amazing to see the progress made and the excitement and buzz around this project is great. My administration will continue to work with all of our public and private partners to continue to advance this project across the finish line. The developer is already accepting tenant applications and some of the housing units are already filling up, which is great to hear. The 31 Elm Street project, along with the City’s Court Square project, will complete reinvigorate our Court Square area which will bring with it unlimited potential for future events and complement the numerous other projects my administration has either completed or are working to advance, including the new civic center parking garage facility and the redevelopment of the properties across the MGM Springfield on State Street and Main Street, just to name a few.”
