Despite a late rally, the Springfield College baseball team was bested by Keene State, 11-9, on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt.

The win lifts the Owls record to 7-10, while Springfield’s record is now 6-9-1.

Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) drove in three runs, scored twice, and had two hits, and Luke DiMauro (Haddam, Conn.) led Springfield with a team-best three hits. Eight different pitchers saw action in the game for the Pride, with starter Colby Welch (Brandon, Fla.) taking the loss despite giving up just two earned runs off five hits in five innings of work.

After no runs were scored through the first three innings, the Pride loaded up the bases with no outs in the fourth and Maynard was able to score on a wild pitch. Keene State responded with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-out double that plated a pair, only to have Springfield get one back in the sixth on a RBI double from Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.).

Keene State would rip consecutive doubles to start the sixth en route to scoring four runs off five hits and added three more runs off a bases-clearing double in the seventh as the lead ballooned to 10-2.

Springfield would not go quietly as it responded with a seven-run eighth inning, with Maynard providing the fireworks with a bases-loaded double that would score three.  After the Owls tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on a fielder’s choice, Springfield was able to load the bases in the ninth, but the hosts would get a strikeout on the final at bat to seal the win.

Springfield is slated to begin New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play this weekend against Babson.
