Hampden County Schools: Hispanic students were most represented ethnicity in 2024-25 school year

Among the many ethnicities represented in Hampden County schools, the most prevalent ethnic group among students enrolled in the 2024-25 school year was Hispanic, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Of the 62,273 pupils attending Hampden County schools, 43.7% were Hispanic. White students made up the second largest ethnic group, representing 40.1% of the Hampden County student body.

In the previous school year, Hispanic students were also the most common group in Hampden County schools, representing 43.6% of the student body.

Philip G. Coburn School had the most even distribution of races among county schools, with 49.4% white, 26.9% Hispanic, 8.3% Asian, 8.2% African American, 6.9% multiracial, and 0.1% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander students.

In the 2024-25 school year, the total number of students enrolled in public schools in the county dropped by 0.6% compared to the previous school year.

Massachusetts spends more money on K-12 education per pupil than most other states, ranking fifth in the nation, according to a 2025 report. The state allocates over $24,000 per pupil, totaling $22.5 billion annually.

According to a 2025 analysis from WalletHub, Massachussetts education system was considered the best in the nation, based on factors such as class size, student performance, funding, school safety, and teacher qualifications.
